In late July 2016, ABC’s Four Corners program aired shocking footage of the abuse of  Aboriginal boys in the Northern Territory’s Don Dale Youth Detention Centre. The Prime Minister promptly called a royal commission into the case. In this podcast, we interview Assistant Professor Jodie O’Leary from Bond University Faculty of Law – a specialist in juvenile justice. She walks us through the legal framework of youth detention, what is so wrong with the treatment of the young people that we have seen featured in the media, and some of the steps needed to improve things.

The original Four Corners report is here; and Jodie has written here about alternatives to youth detention.
